Havanese - Health and Care
Havanese dogs are not recommended for people who cannot devote much time to grooming their pets. The Havanese is a long-coated breed that needs much grooming and care. Pets can be trimmed short. This will make grooming easier. Such dogs need regular brushing though. To make brushing easier, various coat sprays are applied. They help to avoid electricity, which contributes to hair damage during brushing. Brush the dog regularly to avoid matting. Matted hair is much more difficult to manage.

Show Havanese dogs need a great deal of grooming. Puppies should be accustomed to nail clipping from an early age. As a matter of fact, a Havanese foot should look round and neat. However, a dog should always look carefree.
It is advised to regularly check the dog's ears and eyes. Make sure hairs inside the ears are removed. The eyes are a special concern of Havanese owners. Like all small dogs, the Havanese dog has a tendency to develop eye conditions. Havanese dogs often have tear stains. This is especially conspicuous in white dogs.
Havanese dogs can also suffer from PRA (progressive retinal atrophy). This condition is very serious and can be lethal. It is recommended to buy puppies from PRA screened parents. Havanese dogs are known to suffer from luxating patellas, ear infections, and skin disorders.
