Havanese - Breed Development

Havanese dogs are the descendents of small-sized dogs popular in Cuba a few centuries ago and the Poodle. Bichon-type dogs are said to have appeared in Cuba in the 17th century. These were small dogs that were used mostly as companions. The Cubans developed the breed that was mainly white in color and displayed wonderful characteristics. The breed was known under the name "the Blanquito de la Habana."

Blanquita de la Habana dogs were famous for their amiable personality traits and affection to their owners. The breed was popular with the Cuba nobility for a long time. In the 19th century, the Cubans started to take interest in the Poodle. They crossed the Blanquita de la Habana with the Poodle, which resulted in Havanese dog appearance. Despite the fact that the Cubans valued the Poodle for its physical qualities and temperament, they based their breeding programs mostly on the Blanquita de la Habana dog.

The Havanese dog started to gain popularity in Cuba and was being perfected during the first part of the 20th century in a limited area of Cuba. In the 1970s, the Havanese dog appeared in the United States. Cuban refugees brought their pets with them and the breed became known in the United States. The first US lines appeared in 1976. The AKC recognized Havanese dogs in 1996.
